Typical GTA private-pay ranges for 2026, shared to set expectations — these are not quotes. Most agencies have a 3–4 hour minimum per visit. Actual pricing depends on care level, hours, location, and the provider.

Some care may be covered through Ontario Health atHome (the public, government-funded option). Most families combine a few funded hours with private care. See how public and private care compare.

What drives the price

  • Level of care. Companionship costs less than hands-on personal care or dementia care.
  • Hours and schedule. Short visits, overnights, and last-minute coverage cost more per hour.
  • Agency vs independent. Agencies cost more but handle insurance, training, and backup coverage.
  • Specialized needs. Dementia, Parkinson's, palliative, and complex care command higher rates.

Agency vs independent caregiver: the cost trade-off

An independent caregiver might charge $25–$35 per hour where an agency charges $35–$45 for similar help. The gap is not just markup. Agencies carry liability insurance, run police and reference checks, handle payroll and taxes, and send a replacement if your caregiver is sick. Hire an independent and you take on more of that yourself. Neither is automatically better — it depends on how much you want to manage.

Common questions about home care costs

How much does in-home senior care cost in the GTA?
Most private-pay home care in the GTA runs $28–$50 per hour depending on the level of care. Companionship is at the lower end, personal care (PSW) in the middle, and dementia or specialized care at the higher end. Overnight care is roughly $250–$400 per night, and 24-hour or live-in care is roughly $350–$600 per day. These are market ranges, not quotes.
Is there a minimum number of hours?
Yes. Most agencies have a 3 to 4 hour minimum per visit. Independent caregivers are sometimes more flexible, but very short visits are hard to staff.
Does OHIP or the government cover home care?
Some care is publicly funded through Ontario Health atHome, but funded hours are limited and often have waitlists. Most families combine a few funded hours with private care to get full coverage.
Why are agencies more expensive than independent caregivers?
Agencies build in insurance, payroll, training, scheduling, and backup coverage if your caregiver is sick. Independent caregivers are often cheaper per hour but put more of the screening, scheduling, and backup planning on you.
